T.L.O was a student in high school who's purse was because they suspected she had cigarettes.

- Before trial, T.L.O moved to suppress the evidence found in her search, the trial denied this motion.

- On appeal, the Superior Court of New Jersey, Appellate Division affirmed the denial of the motion to suppress evidence. The New Jersey Supreme Court reversed, holding that the exclusionary rule of the Fourth Amendment applies to searches and seizures conducted by school officials in public schools.
